The Canadian construction industry is one of Canada's most important industries, accounting for 7.8% of gross domestic product. The construction of residential buildings accounts for the largest share. The sector grew very strongly, particularly in 2021, in the new construction segment of individual houses and multi-family dwellings. Investments in commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings have been increasing since 2020.
An important part of the growth in the construction sector is due to Canada's "green" goals. In the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, Canada committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. Buildings contribute with approximately 18% to Canada's greenhouse gas emissions. According to the “Build Smart” strategy, that was launched in 2017, only zero-emission buildings should be built from 2030 onwards. In the meantime, new buildings should be built more energy efficient and existing buildings should be renovated or retrofitted.
