Since his re-election in 2012, Prime Minister Abe has been enforcing his policy of “Abenomics”, basing on the “three arrows” of fiscal stimulus, monetary easing and structural reforms to encourage foreign as well as private investments, support economic growth and therefore strengthen Japan’s competitiveness. Shortly after the implementation in late 2012, “Abenomics” showed their first effects: While Japan’s unemployment rate fell from 4 to 3,7 percent on the one hand, the weakening of the Japanese Yen was followed by a worsening of the Japanese trade deficit on the other.

Upon outlining the main content of “Abenomics”, our speaker will discuss the question whether Prime Minister Abe’s reforms can succeed in leading Japan out of the long-lasting deflation and open the economy for foreign investments. He will also illustrate which influence the recent reforms of the Japanese government may have on the German economy and on German companies operating in Japan.

Speaker: Dr. Marco Wagner, Economist, Commerzbank AG

Supporter: Consulate General of Japan in Düsseldorf, Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), the German-Japanese Society (DJG) am Niederrhein, the Japanese Chamber of Industry and Commerce (JIHK) and Breidenbacher Hof Düsseldorf
